TCF Québec

(French Proficiency Test for immigration to Quebec)

Intended audience?

 Intended audience: anyone, regardless of their nationality or native language, who wishes to begin the application process with the Quebec Ministry of Immigration, Diversity and Inclusion to obtain permanent residency in Quebec.

 

 What is the TCF Québec?

 The TCF for Quebec has been developed to meet the requirements of the authorities of Quebec that have made the passing of an French proficiency exam obligatory and systematic as part of their procedures to obtain a selection certificate for Quebec (CSQ) which leads to the issuance of a permanent visa. French citizens as well as other French speakers are also affected by this measure.

 

 Waiver?

 The authorities of Quebec wave the obligation to pass this test if the candidate has already successfully passed the TCF general public with the speaking component or has obtained either the DELF or the DALF (under the conditions of having received at least the minimum score for the listening and speaking parts and has been valid for less than 2 years).

 

 TCF Québec components ?  It evaluates general French language proficiency in listening comprehension, reading comprehension, speaking and writing.
 To succeed?  


Since the 1st of August 2013, the authorities of Quebec require a minimum B2 level to issue a maximum of 16 points for this linguistic evaluation.   This grading scale, set out by the Quebecoise Ministry for Immigration, Diversity and Inclusion, is comprised as follows:

This grading scale is only valid for the main applicant. The spouse of the main applicant can only receive points for proficiency in oral comprehension and expression (maximum of 3 points for each skill, maximum of 6 points in total). 

 

 Validity of the results?

 

Your "TCF for Quebec" certificate is not the only document that may be requested of you by the Quebec immigration department. You must justify other elements (financial, professional, etc.). Your certification has a limited validity. It lasts for two years. ​

 When will I receive my results?

 

 The results are sent by mail within approximately 3 days. 
If I fail the test? You can retake the “TCF for Quebec” as many times as you need; you must, however, wait at least a month before you can retake the same test.
